ARTICLE OF THE DAY: ObamaCare - It's all about control

10/12/13

Larry Wulf and his wife Deb Wulf, Deneen Sherlock of Clairton and Isacc 11 and his mother Army veteran Jackie Booher of Fayette City wave to vehicles as the drive under the overpass on Rt 51 in Jeffererson Hills Borough on Friday,October 11,2013 as part of Impeach Obama Overpass movement that is nation wide. They are also showing support for the truckdrivers driving on Washington D.C. this weekend.
On health care, the president's pile of broken promises keeps getting higher. Consider this gem from Aug. 20, 2009: “Let's be clear about the fact that nobody has proposed anything close to a government takeover of health care.”

Well, yes, somebody did. President Obama is now well on his way to orchestrating the federal government's takeover of Americans' health care.

Commandeering the resources of major federal departments, particularly the Department of Health and Human Services and the IRS, the administration and its allies in Congress have created numerous federal bureaus, commissions and programs and have issued thousands of pages of rules, regulations, guidelines and directives, all reinforced by unprecedented mandates and new taxes, fees, fines and penalties. Central planning and coercion holds this sprawling thing together.

Virtually all key health care decisions will be made by government officials. Not you. Not your employer. Not your insurance company.

Beginning Jan. 1, government officials will require you to buy a federally approved health plan or pay federal fines or tax penalties. They will define and redefine, at their pleasure, the content of your health benefits package, meaning the medical treatments and procedures you must have; the kind and level of preventive health care services you must have; the level of coverage you must have; the level of cost sharing, deductibles and co-payments that are acceptable — to them, not you.

Writing in the October 2010 edition of The New England Journal of Medicine, Sara Rosenbaum, professor of law at George Washington University and a supporter of the law, perhaps best described ObamaCare's transformative effect on private insurance: “It will take on certain characteristics of a public utility.” In other words, private insurance will be “private” in name only.
You will get what government officials say you will get.

Because the statutory language is often vague, “experts” at HHS and the IRS are free to write detailed regulations that cover a multitude of thorny items, such as the definition of “quality care” or “value” in doctor- or hospital-care delivery. Of course, officials who make the rules can make exceptions to the rules, issuing waivers, or exemptions, or securing special treatment for favored groups. The most obnoxious example is the Office of Personnel Management's decision to give hefty taxpayer subsidies to members of Congress and congressional staff to offset their premium costs in the new health insurance exchanges next year. Those special subsidies are bereft of statutory authority.

Government officials will exercise more control over the flow of your health care dollars and subject you to mandates and penalties. Your personal freedom will be curtailed by those who claim to know what is best for you.

Meanwhile, the president and his allies will insist that what you are witnessing firsthand is not a “government takeover” of health care.

You can either believe them or your own eyes.

Birds of a Feather: Obamacare needs support, says Turkish PM Erdoğan

10/12/13

Erdoğan says the separation of powers was holding back the US government
Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan voiced support for U.S. President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform, known as “Obamacare,” while simultaneously underlining his government has been acting with an understanding based on prioritizing the individual rather than the state.

Obama has taken a step to reform the health service sector, but some circles have been standing in his way, said Erdoğan, who at the time described the separation of powers and “bureaucratic oligarchy” as the government’s main obstacle, saying it was preventing them from introducing “further services.”

“And here, actually, there is a need to support Mr. Obama, why isn’t this support being lent?,” Erdoğan questioned in an address delivered on Oct. 11 at a workshop held on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child.

“Because humanity is very important, not everyone can be rich, not everyone can find the opportunities of a social state, but with this law, the opportunities of a social state are provided,” he said, criticizing the idea that money made by some could not be spent on others, saying the state had the authority to spend the money in its treasury.

Erdoğan’s remarks came as the federal government in the U.S. has remained shut down since Oct. 1, due to a deadlock between Republicans and Democrats over the federal budget.

How To Access Government Websites During The Shutdown

10/12/13

Shutdown notice from DOE.gov on October 2, 2013

The U.S. government has shut down. Sadly, so have most of its websites. No astronomy picture of the day at NASA.gov. No food pyramid guide at USDA.gov. No scanned images of old-timey baseball cards at LOC.gov.
That's the bad news. Now here's the good news: There are two easy methods to try accessing shut-down government sites.
Your first option is Google's (or some other search engine's) "Cached" feature. Enter your keywords, hit search, then look for a tiny green arrow next to the URL of the government-hosted search result that you're interested in. Click the arrow to open a menu, click "Cached", and presto—you get the last version of the page that the search engine crawled.

Look for the green arrow
Google
Sadly, the cached page won't always load images. This is more true for totally dark government websites like NASA.gov than other websites deemed "essential," which are still partially open for business—for example, the weather forecasts at NOAA.gov. Also note that this trick will lose its shine as the shutdown drags on; eventually Google and Bing and others will start caching those annoying "Due to the lapse in federal government funding, this website is not available" screens. (For a depressing gallery of those related to science, check out Jonathan Eisen's gallery.)

If the "Cached" option fails, your second option is the WayBack Machine by Archive.org. Since 1996, its software robots have scoured the Internet and saved copies of the most trafficked websites. You can tap this 10-petabyte-plus collection of website snapshots as long as you have a URL (easily had through search engines).

The WayBack machine is more thorough and burrows several layers into a given site, caching multimedia left and right, but it's not always foolproof, either. The Internet is growing at a faster and faster rate, and the WayBack Machine has struggled to keep up. Another problem related to ever-limited archiving power is that the deeper you click into an archived site, the less likely you are to find cached photos.

But sometimes you luck out. For example, I was able to download this glorious photo of the Eagle Nebula from NASA's September 29th Astronomy Picture of the Day.
Take that, shutdown.

SHOCKER: U.S. Adds Two Times More Debt than Economic Output in Last 2 Years

10/12/13

The Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee has put together this chart to show that U.S. has added two times more debt than economic output in the last two years:
"President Obama said that increasing the debt limit does not increase the debt," the minority side of the Senate Budget Committee says in a statement. "But when the Treasury department started using so-called extraordinary measures to avoid a breach of the debt ceiling in May, 2011, the debt limit stood at $14,294 billion.
"Today it stands at $16,699 billion, which was reached when Treasury started using extraordinary measures in May of this year.  That's a $2,405 billion increase in 2 years.
"Meanwhile, the economy, as measured by GDP only increased by $1,199 billion between the second quarter of 2011 and the second quarter of this year.
"So the debt increased twice as much as the economy over the last two years, the very definition of unsustainable.  The growth of a nation’s debt cannot for long exceed the growth of its economy – which is precisely what is happening now."

Park Service Paramilitaries: The government has King John’s idea of public lands.

10/12/13
By Mark Steyn

If a government shuts down in the forest and nobody hears it, that’s the sound of liberty dying. The so-called shutdown is, as noted last week, mostly baloney: Eighty-three percent of the supposedly defunded government is carrying on as usual, impervious to whatever restraints the people’s representatives might wish to impose, and the 800,000 soi-disant “non-essential” workers have been assured that, as soon as the government is once again lawfully funded, they will be paid in full for all the days they’ve had at home.

Column: ‘Vanity Fair’ and the New Feudalism

BY:
Looking for a distraction from the government shutdown and debt ceiling debate? I urge you to read Vanity Fair’s latest advertisement for “The New Establishment,” a list of “50 Titans Disrupting Media, Technology, and Culture,” the century-old magazine’s annual mash-note to the rich and powerful and self-satisfied. These disrupters innovate technologies, set the trends, define the limits of acceptable conversation in culture and politics and society, and pour money into the network of liberal foundations and Democratic campaigns around which our world is increasingly organized. They are the winners in the cognitive lottery that is the New Economy, the men and women creating and shaping, by accident and by design, the “New Feudalism” described so well by Joel Kotkin in The Daily Beast. It’s good to know their names.

Nut Talk: Should We Live Shorter to Save the Planet?

10/12/13

Humans are the enemy! A new study published in Ecology and Society claims that longer life expectancy for us is bad news for the planet. From the study by Aaron Lotz and Craig R. Allen:
We found a positive relationship between life expectancy and the percentage of endangered and invasive species in a country…The overall trend in high-income countries with improvements to the Human Development Index, which includes human life expectancy as one of its variables, is toward a disproportionately larger negative impact on a country’s ecological footprint. However, some lower-income countries have a high level of development without a high impact on ecosystem services (Moran et al. 2008).

Increased life expectancy means that people live longer and affect the planet longer; each year is another year of carbon footprint, ecological footprint, use of natural resources, etc. The magnitude of this impact is increased as more people live longer.
Bad humans!  Bad, bad humans.

Alfred Nobel must be rolling over in his grave: The Dark Side Of The Nobel Prizes

10/12/13

This is a half nausiating story of the history of the Nobel Prize. Sift through the liberal spin and you'll realize that Nobel actually meant well...

When physicist Richard Feynman was asked which now-deceased person from history he would most like to speak with, and what he would say, he said: “My father. I would tell him that I won the Nobel Prize.” The prestige of a Nobel Prize is not in doubt, but its 112-year history has been controversial and colourful.

The story behind the Prize is well known: industrialist Alfred Nobel stipulated in his 1895 will that most of his fortune be used to establish a fund to award five annual prizes “to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.” Prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace were first awarded in 1901; economics was added in 1969.

DEMOCRATS TO AMERICA: WE OWN THE GOVERNMENT!

10/11/13

In the current fight over the government shutdown, Republicans are simply representing the views of the American people.
Americans didn’t ask for Obamacare, they don’t want it, but now their insurance premiums are going through the roof, their doctors aren’t accepting it, and their employers are moving them into part-time work — or firing them — to avoid the law’s mandates.
Contrary to Obama’s promises, it turns out: You can’t keep your doctor, you can’t keep your insurance — you can’t even keep your job. In other words, it’s a typical government program, but this one wrecks your health care.
Also, the president did raise taxes on the middle class in defiance of his well-worn campaign promise not to. Indeed, Obamacare is the largest tax hike in U.S. history.
Among the other changes effected by this law are:

Harry Reid Wants Americans To Suffer From Shutdown

10/11/13

Word came this week that the National Institutes of Health has suspended therapy-dog visits to sick children at its clinical center because of a 25% reduction in staff, even though volunteers run the program.
Seems the veterinarians who evaluate the dogs have been furloughed. So how about the frequently used dogs that have already been evaluated? No deal.
Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid refused to fund NIH clinical trials for children with cancer. When asked why, if it could mean saving a single child, Reid replied: "Why would we do that?"
These are just kids, after all. Who cares if they're in pain or die because of his intransigence and lack of compassion?
It's comforting to know, however, that the House and Senate gyms are still open, that the government had enough money to buy a mechanical bull and, while the feds barricaded the open-air National Mall and threatened to fine and arrest those who walk there, they'll let an immigration amnesty rally take place on those same grounds.

Teacher Makes Students Decide Who Lives, Who Dies

A classroom of 14 and 15-year-old Illinois high school students was assigned the task of deciding the fate of ten fictional characters in an exercise that critics called a lesson in death panels.

The assignment was part of a sociology unit for freshmen and sophomore students at St. Joseph-Ogden High School in St. Joseph, just east of Champaign. The story was first reported by Champion News.
The lesson involves 10 people who are in desperate need of kidney dialysis.
For Fox News Only
For Fox News Only
“Unless they receive this procedure, they will die,” the lesson states.
But there’s a problem. The local hospital only has enough machines to support six patients.
“That means four people are not going to live,” the assignment states. “You must decide from the information below which six will survive.”
According to the worksheet I received, the student opted to spare the doctor, lawyer, housewife, teacher, cop and Lutheran minister.
The others weren’t so lucky.
Among those unceremoniously dispatched to the hereafter were an ex-convict, a prostitute, college student and a disabled person.
It sure looked like a lesson on death panels to Jarratt.
“The first thing I thought was they were desensitizing kids to death panels,” he told me. “They are preparing them for it.”
Principal Brian Brooks told me that assessment is way off base.
“The assignment has nothing to do with a ‘Death Panel,’” he said.
He said the purpose of the lesson was to teach students about social values and how people in our society unfortunately create biases based off of professions, race and gender.
“The teacher’s goal is to educate students on the fact that these social value biases exist, and that hopefully students will see things from a different perspective after the activity is completed,” he said.
That’s all well and good if you were the doctor — but try telling that to the 9-year-old disabled kid.
“The teacher’s purpose in the element of the assignment you are referring to is to get students emotionally involved in order to participate in the classroom discussion,” he said.
Jarratt said he suspects there’s more to the assignment than just a lesson in bias.
“There are so many other ways to teach about that,” he said. “Why would they go down that road — especially with freshmen in high school?”
No matter what how the school tries to explain it, a group of young kids was deciding who got to live and who got a death sentence.
St. Joseph-Ogden High School’s social studies class sounds more like a recruitment center for the Department of Health and Human Services.

One of Our Own Needs Our Help: Constitutional Conservative and LA Senate Candidate Rob Maness to Join Million Vet March on Sunday

U.S. Senate candidate Rob Maness (R-LA) will join other veterans from around the country in the Million Vet March on Washington this Sunday, Oct. 13, at 9 a.m.

Maness, who retired with the rank of colonel in 2011 after 32 years in the United States Air Force, said the closure of war memorials during the government shutdown is an attack on all veterans and on the memory of those who gave their lives protecting our freedom.

"That the Obama Administration is attempting to shut down memorials and prevent citizens from visiting these monuments is not just unacceptable, it's an outrage," Maness said.  "The president is playing politics with things that should be off-limits - our history, our courage, and our sense of honor."

Maness, who has already embarked on a tour of all 64 parishes in Louisiana, will interrupt his schedule to fly to Washington on Saturday night and will be among the honored guests at the march on Sunday.

"All Americans - civilians and military personnel alike - should be appalled at the president's attempt to punish the people of the United States for the gridlock in Congress and his own failure of leadership," Maness said.  "The standoff in the Capitol and the shutdown of the federal government are about important matters of public policy, but they should not be about limiting the freedoms our Constitution guarantees and that I spent 32 years in uniform defending.

"What the president doesn't realize is that every time he does battle with the free people of the United States, he loses even more of his grip on power," Maness said.  "Everywhere I go, people are seeing the tyranny of liberal Washington and the all-out assault on our liberty.  It will not stand.  I fought for our nation in uniform and I will fight for our freedoms in the United States Senate."
