Obama: Relax, I Don't Want to Raise Taxes Until After I'm Re-Elected

The “I want to raise taxes, just not until after I’m re-elected” part is probably coming soon to a Republican campaign ad near you, and the part about the best-selling authors — I’m not sure where that came from. The White House appears to be running low on culprits for the bad economy.

Real Clear Politics:

President Obama wants to let you know that no one is getting off the hook. Be it CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, corporate jet owners, hedge fund managers, or …. best-selling authors? Yes:

We weren’t balancing the budget off of middle-class families and working-class families. And we weren’t letting hedge fund managers or authors of best-selling books off the hook. That is a reasonable proposition.

Obama concluded, “we’re not looking to raise taxes right now” — just in 2013 and 2014.

In addition to the usual suspects, Obama is ratcheting up the pressure on authors of best-sellers. Do you know what this means? It means that Chuck Schumer has absolutely nothing to worry about.

As for calling for proposed tax increases, remember the Saturday Night Live sketch before the 1984 election when Walter Mondale had pledged to raise taxes, and he was appearing on a show called “What Were You Thinking?” It’s too early to tell, but we might be seeing a sequel to that skit in progress.
