Live video: Chief executive of the NHS, Sir David Nicholson, faces questions from MPs

March 5, 2013

The Health Committee is hearing evidence from Sir David Nicholson, the chief executive of the NHS in England, on the public inquiry into the failings of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.

The public inquiry, chaired by Robert Francis QC, published its report on 6 February, calling for wide-ranging reforms of the NHS, including suggesting that hospitals that cover up doctors' mistakes and offer patients poor treatment should face fines and possible closure.

An estimated 400 to 1,200 patients died as a result of poor care between January 2005 and March 2009 at Stafford Hospital, a small district general hospital in Staffordshire.

Twenty Conservative MPs are calling for Sir David's resignation over the scandal.
