A real-life Bart Simpson faced an unlikely coincidence when appearing before a judge named Mr Burns.

The 56-year-old company director denied possessing a prohibited firearm, or to borrow a phrase from his TV namesake, claimed: ‘I didn’t do it’.

Executive Barton Simpson was stopped with the firearm at Birmingham airport on May 31 last year.

He came face-to-face with Mr Recorder Burns at Warwick crown court this week, a judge who shares his surname with nuclear power plant boss Charles Montgomery Burns from the American cartoon The Simpsons.

‘It’s a bizarre coincidence that Bart Simpson is actually on trial in front of Mr Burns but it’ll proceed as any other criminal case would,’ a court worker told the Daily Mirror.

‘There were some eyebrows raised when the court list was published.’

Having denied the charge, Mr Simpson stopped short of telling the judge to ‘eat his shorts’.

With over 500 episodes created since 1989, The Simpsons is the longest running American sitcom of all-time.
