Syria's civil war is the outcome of a complex interplay of Islamic faction fighting and Iranian influence

If the US takes sides, who will benefit?
Arming the rebels will end up assisting the likes of Al-Qaeda. Ignoring Assad means allowing Iran to have its way.
In fact, whatever the outcome, only Iran seems set to benefit the most.
So just how do the sides stack up?
