Big Brother Still Watching: SD Panel Kills Bill Against Radar Traffic Cameras

02/28/2014

A South Dakota representative says she was disappointed to watch her bill prohibiting traffic cameras die by a narrow margin in a Senate committee.  The bill would have kept local governments from using cameras with radar detectors to ticket drivers for speed and red light violations.
Democrat Peggy Gibson of Huron says she thought she had the votes to pass her bill. But the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 4-3 Thursday to kill it. It had passed the House earlier this month.
Supporters of the bill said devices with radars and cameras that lead to tickets violate due process, and that tickets can go to the wrong person.
One opponent said local governments should decide whether to use the devices.  No such devices are currently used in the state.
