de Blasio to remove hundreds of kids from homeless shelters over "safety issues". Is your home safe?

02/22/2014

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City is removing about 400 children from two homeless shelters where inspectors have repeatedly found a range of hazards.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday that all families with children will be transferred from the Auburn Family Residence in Brooklyn and the Catherine Street shelter in Manhattan.

There are 64 families at Auburn and 83 at Catherine Street. The city is finding subsidized permanent housing or suitable temporary shelter for them.

The plan was first reported by The New York Times, which spotlighted conditions at the Auburn shelter in stories last year. Inspectors have found vermin, violence, insufficient heat, mold, lead, fire hazards and sexual predators there and many violations at Catherine Street.

Auburn and Catherine Street will be renovated and used for homeless, childless adult couples.
