House to Hear Bill Ending Local Education Contributions

02/26/2014

JUNEAU -The House Judiciary Committee Wednesday will begin taking testimony on a bill ending required local contributions to education.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Tammie Wilson, a Republican from North Pole, and it mirrors a lawsuit filed by the Ketchikan Gateway Borough last month.
Both the bill and the lawsuit claim the state is the responsible party for funding education in Alaska and not organized boroughs and municipalities.
Local entities contributed $221 million last year toward education.
The bill maintains that burden should be picked up by the state. It also says the state should not force organized boroughs and municipalities to fund a state required function.
