SAO PAULO – A supporter of the Santos soccer team died after a beating by fans of the rival Sao Paulo club, authorities in Brazil’s largest city said Monday.

The killing took place around 8:00 p.m. Sunday following a match between the two clubs at Sao Paulo’s Morumbi stadium, a spokesman for the municipal Public Safety Department told Efe.

Marcio Barreto de Toledo, 34, and other Santos fans were waiting at a bus stop in the city’s Jardim Aricanduva neighborhood when men wearing Sao Paulo team jerseys pulled up in two cars.

The men got out and started beating Toledo with iron bars, while the other Santos supporters fled, the municipal spokesman said.

Toledo died later at Tatuape Municipal Hospital.

Santos, the team of soccer icon Pele, and Santos battled to a scoreless draw in Sunday’s match.
