Part II: The Three Mile Island partial meltdown as it unfolded 35 years ago

03/28/2014

"The China Syndrome" is a terrific thriller that incidentally raises the most unsettling questions about how safe nuclear power plants really are.

This was the lede to Roger Ebert's review of "The China Syndrome,"which opened a mere 12 days before the accident at Three Mile Island that led to the partial meltdown. The movie, which was shown nationwide — including at the Elks Theatre in Middletown — proved to be a harrowing foreshadowing of the events to come.

The timeline presented in this post narrates what happened during the partial meltdown and the days just after. The YouTube video below was compiled by markdcatlin, who assembled it from clips of news conferences, radio broadcasts and interviews conducted during the events of Three Mile Island and its aftermath. Try playing the clips as you read through the timeline.
