CHESTER TOWNSHIP — A former Republican freeholder from Morris County is retiring with a big boost in his public pension thanks to a two-year stint with the New Jersey Highlands Council.
Sixty-eight-year-old Gene Feyl was paid $116,000 a year as director of the Highlands Council, which works to preserve open space and protect water supplies in northwestern New Jersey.
The state says that entitles him to a state pension of over $63,000 a year, or 54.5 percent of his compensation last year.
Feyl has 21 years in the pension system. Without the two-year council job, the state says Feyl's annual pension would have only been about $14,000, based on a final freeholder salary of about $25,000.
Feyl told the New Jersey Herald the pension was not his motive for taking the job.
