Authorities are working to clear streets following a series of shootouts and narcoblockades reported south of the border in Reynosa.
Residents turned to the #reynosafollow hashtag on the social media network twitter to report the violence.
Gunfire was first reported in the city's westside around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Mexican officials have not issued a statement about the violence but residents reported enduring at least two hours of battles and narcoblockades.
The shootouts and blockades affected roadways and neighborhoods on the city's westside and southside.
Residents reported a military helicopter in the skies.
