Hate Crime: Three Dead in Shootings at Jewish Centers in Kansas

04/14/2014

WASHINGTON – Three people died Sunday when a gunman opened fire at two different Jewish centers on the outskirts of Kansas City, Kansas, after which the suspect was arrested, local police reported.

The first shooting occurred at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City and the second at Village Shalom, a retirement community near the center, according to police cited by local television channels KCTV and KSHB.

The suspect was arrested about a mile from the retirement community and, according to several witnesses, shouted “Heil Hitler” while police took him away.

The FBI was dispatched to the site of the shootings to investigate the incident with local authorities, spokesman Joel Sealer told CNN.

Local authorities blocked access to the two buildings where the gunfire erupted. In one of them, 75 people had been in the conference hall, most of them children and teenagers who were getting ready to take part in the audition for a singing competition, KCTV reported.

A spokesman for the Overland Park Medical Center confirmed to local KSHB TV that one shooting victim “under 16” had been admitted in “critical condition,” but no further information on that person’s situation was available.
