North Carolina's Board of Transportation Funding Committee will hear more Wednesday about a proposal that would charge drivers a tax for every mile they drive, WLOS TV reported Tuesday.
A study completed by North Carolina State University will be presented explaining in part how such a plan would work. A proposal would be to charge .5-cents-per-mile for cars the study says would generate $495 million in annual state revenue. At issue are falling state gas tax revenues in part because of more fuel-efficient cars requiring less gas.
North Carolina drivers currently pay one of the highest gas taxes in the nation.
Bill Heckstall lives ten miles from the Tennessee border.
"Let's put it this way," said Heckstall. "I can put about three extra gallons of gas in my car per fill compared to here (North Carolina), just to buy regular gas, because of the gas tax."
