Survey: Nearly 90% of Mexicans Say Corruption Prevalent in Public Sector

MEXICO CITY – Some 88.3 percent of Mexicans consider corruption to be a prevalent practice among public servants in their contacts with citizens, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) said, citing the results of a new survey.

The 2013 National Survey on Government Quality and Impact found that 48 percent of Mexicans say corrupt practices are “very frequent” among public employees, while 40.3 percent say corruption is frequent, the INEGI said.

Crime is Mexico’s top problem, according to 70.4 percent of the respondents, with unemployment the No. 2 problem and corruption ranking third.

Some 89.7 percent of Mexicans view corruption as a “very frequent” or “frequent” problem in dealings with police, followed by contacts with political parties, which were identified by 84.4 percent of respondents, and prosecutors, who drew a 78.4 percent response rate in the survey, the INEGI said.

The survey of 1,000 households posed a series of questions to respondents 18 and older in cities with a population of 100,000 or more about their experiences with corruption in public services and contacts with officials.
