Pig saves family from trailer fire

Move over Honey Boo Boo and company!

MT. CARMEL, IL (WFIE) -
The Mt. Carmel Fire Department responded to an early morning trailer fire at 11516 E. 920 Lane in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
Fire officials say flames were showing from the side of the trailer when they arrived around 4:40 a.m. Sunday morning.
A Mount Carmel family is counting their blessings after their pet saved their lives.
The homeowner told crews she and her grand kids were awakened by their family pig named 'Lucky', and escaped through a bedroom window.
The Farler family has had him since February.
"They make great pets, they're easy to potty train," says Ina Farler. "He was potty trained in a days time.  And they're loving.  They can be very protective actually.  He loves my grandkids to death."
Maybe it was that protective instinct that went into play this morning.
""He started screaming," says Ina. "He would jump down, run to the door and then jump back up on the bed and hit me really hard.  I sat up to see what was wrong with him because he usually doesn't do that through the night.  When I sat up, I realized the room was really smoky."
The heat from the fire was so hot she knew she had to get out immediately.
She was able to get her two grandchildren out before a neighbor helped her and Lucky get out of the house.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames and doused hot spots for about two hours.
The home and everything inside is gone but Ina is happy her family is safe.
Currently, the family is staying in a hotel while they figure out what they're going to do next.
The Mt. Carmel Fire Department was assisted by the Keensburg Fire Department and the Wabash County Sheriff's Office.
An investigation is on-going for the cause of the fire.
