ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gary King's newly hired campaign manager resigned on Tuesday because of disparaging comments posted on Twitter in the past about women, Republicans and others.
The departure of Steve Verzwyvelt came a day after King announced he had hired the Louisiana native to run his general election campaign against Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.
King announced the resignation after a conservative website, the Washington Free Beacon, posted a story online about the tweets by Verzwyvelt, many of them from 2011 and 2012.
King said he previously had been unaware of the comments.
"While they were his personal views, Mr. Verzwyvelt's comments were, nonetheless not up to the standards of what I expect from my employees and in direct conflict with my own beliefs of tolerance, respect and decency," King said in a statement.
Access to Verzwyvelt's Twitter account has been restricted. He did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
According to the online story, one 2012 tweet read: "Fat girls should not wear bikini's (sic)!"
Another tweet referred to the daughter of former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and a reality star: "Bristol Palin and Snooki should be the poster children for birth control."
In April, Democrats criticized Martinez and called for her to apologize after a liberal publication released recordings in which she and aides used profanity and offensive names to describe political opponents.
Verzwyvelt was hired to replace Jim Farrell, who said he left the campaign at the end of the primary election to spend more time with his family in Las Cruces.
King's campaign was the first in New Mexico for Verzwyvelt, who's worked on campaigns in Louisiana, Texas, Florida and other states for about a dozen years.
