BOGOTA – Colombian state oil company Ecopetrol announced on Wednesday the start of production from two wells in U.S. waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
The first well, in Block 4 of the Canyon DeSoto, began operating on July 13 and is producing 9,500 barrels of oil equivalent per day, the firm said in a statement.
Of that total, 2,441 barrels belong to the Colombian company’s Ecopetrol America Inc unit, with the rest going to U.S.-based Murphy Oil Corp.’s Murphy Exploration & Production Co., the majority owner and operator of both wells.
The second well, in Block 48, has output of roughly 60 million cubic feet of gas per day. Ecopetrol controls a net 15.6 million cubic feet per day.
Production in Block 48 began on April 22, Ecopetrol said.
Two weeks ago, Ecopetrol announced a crude discovery at a well in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico that it has been exploring in partnership with operator Royal Dutch Shell and Canada’s Nexen.
The Rydberg well is located 75 miles (120 kilometers) offshore in the Mississippi Canyon Block 525 and is expected to yield 100 million boe, Ecopetrol said.
