Dallas police chief calls on unions to unite

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas chief of police wants to unite the area's four unions.

Chief David Brown tells the Dallas Morning News (http://bit.ly/1knbbed ) it's time for the city to have one union representing all of its officers regardless of race. He says it is distracting to have to coordinate with four groups.

The chief's statement comes in response to a recent fight over the training academy. The newspaper reports that the Black Police Association told commanders they believed black recruits were failing out of the academy on some tests at a higher rate than whites.

Union leaders tell the newspaper that Brown's idea is good but unrealistic at the moment. The Dallas Police Association president says he has tried to unite the groups before but has been rejected.
