Brazilian Cities Hit by Vandalism after Humiliating World Cup Loss (VIDEO)

SAO PAULO – Vandals took to the streets in cities across Brazil following Germany’s 7-1 trouncing of the national team in the World Cup semifinals, torching buses and committing other violent acts.

In Belo Horizonte, the host city for Tuesday’s game, 12 people were arrested after fights broke out in bars and streets in the Savassi neighborhood, a popular tourist destination.

Police removed fans from Mineirao Stadium, where the game was played, when they tried to destroy public property.

Unidentified individuals in Sao Paulo, where residents had been preparing to celebrate a Brazilian victory at FanFest and other events, set fire to 15 buses in the garage of a transport firm, the city’s SPTrans municipal transportation agency said.

The incident occurred 30 minutes after the end of the match, the worst defeat ever for a Brazilian national team.

The press has branded the lop-sided loss to Germany “shameful.”

Two other buses were burned in Sao Paulo overnight, while unidentified individuals forced passengers off a bus in the neighboring city of Guarulhos and torched the vehicle.

A Ponto Frio appliance store was destroyed in the same city, resulting in the arrests of three men and two teenagers, police said.

The FIFA-sponsored FanFest in Salvador, the capital of the northeastern state of Bahia and one of the 12 World Cup host cities, was cancelled when some of the 50,000 people in attendance became unruly and started mugging people.

Incidents occurred at the FanFests in other Brazilian World Cup host cities and police used tear gas to break up a fight between fans in the northeastern city of Recife.

Fifteen buses were stoned and another was burned in Curitiba, and three people were arrested in Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach for endangering the public safety.
