Anchor Babies In The News: Three teens indicted in homeless murder case

The three Albuquerque teens arrested for the beating deathsof two homeless men have been indicted by a Bernalillo County grand jury.

The three teens were arrested and charged with the deaths of two homeless men sleeping in a field on the city's Westside in July 2014.

According to APD, the teens admitted to investigators that they beat the victims using their hands, feet, bricks, sticks and a metal pole.

Alex Rios, 18:

Two counts of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, armed robbery, two counts of attempted armed robbery, 11 counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault, two counts of tampering with evidence, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, three counts of battery, and conspiracy to commit first degree murder.

Nathaniel Carrillo, 16:

Two counts of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, armed robbery, two counts of attempted armed robbery, 11 counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault, two counts of tampering with evidence, five counts of battery, and conspiracy to commit first degree murder.

Gilbert Tafoya, 15:

Two counts of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, armed robbery, two counts of attempted armed robbery, 11 counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault, two counts of tampering with evidence, three counts of battery, and conspiracy to commit first degree murder.

According to APD, there is no indication that the teens sought out their victims based on race. Therefore, hate crime charges were not presented to or returned by the grand jury.

Rios remains held at the Metropolitan Detention Center. Carrillo and Tafoya, meanwhile, are being held at the Juvenile Detention Center. All three are held on $1,000,000 cash or surety bond.
