Five suspects are facing federal charges after two of them were caught lying on top of a marijuana load.
Border Patrol responded to an area south of Las Ruias, a colonia area near the Rio Grande, after a sensor tipped them off on Aug. 20.
That’s when they saw eight crossing the river and running into a nearby cotton field.
Juan Carlos Castro and Luis Gerado Herrera-Montoya were then found on top of two bundles of marijuana, documents alleged.
An air unit was called to the scene where they found another three suspects yards from where two suspects were found lying on the drug bundles.
Mario Medina-Lopez, Felipe Maya-Felix and a juvenile were also taken into custody.
Border Patrol found a total of 683.5 pounds of marijuana on scene, according to court documents.
The four men were booked into the Cameron County Jail on drug charges.
They have requested a court appointed attorney in the case.
A preliminary hearing has been set for Aug. 27 at 1:30 pm before Magistrate Judge Igncacio Torteya III.
They are currently in custody of the US Marshal’s and are being held without bond.
