Authorities have linked a man accused in the death of an off-duty Border Patrol agent to another violent crime.
Cameron County Sheriff's Department deputies believe Gustavo Tijerina was one of three men involved in a rural carjacking just north of La Feria.
Court records obtained by Action 4 News show that the gunpoint robbery happened back on June 16th.
The carjacking happened almost six weeks before Tijerina was involved in a botched robbery in neighboring Willacy County that ended with the death of off-duty Border Patrol agent Javier Vega, Jr.
Rural Carjacking
Records show that Tijerina drove while Jesse Ibarra and Felix Camarillo carjacked a man and his grandson on a rural stretch of Solis Road just north of Expressway 83.
According to the records, Tijerina was driving along Solis Road when he saw the elderly man and his grandson with the truck cutting tree branches.
Tijerina allegedly told Ibarra and Camarillo to take the truck.
The two men used a pistol and an air pellet gun to take the man's truck, his cellphone and his grandson's cell phone.
They fled the scene but a trailer attached to the stolen truck got loose and crashed into a ditch and then the truck broke down prompting them to abandon it and get a ride from Tijerina.
Court records show that the rural carjacking remained unsolved until Cameron County deputies spoke with Tijerina at the Willacy County Jail in the days following his arrest for Vega's murder.
Suspects Caught
Deputies tracked down Ibarra and Camarillo to a home at 221 Cinco de Mayo in La Paloma on Wednesday where both men fled from authorities.
Camarillo was caught after a brief foot chase while Ibarra was found hiding underneath a storage shed three blocks away.
Both men are facing two counts of aggravated robbery and evading arrest charges while Ibarra is facing an additional charge of resisting arrest.
Camarillo remains in custody under $505,000 dollars in bonds while Ibarra is expected to face judge today.
Tijerina, who is also believed to have robbed fishermen in the Camp Perry area, has not been formally charged for the La Feria carjacking but remains custody at the Willacy County Jail for Vega's murder.
