Ex-Progreso mayor, family get prison time in bribery scandal

The former mayor of Progreso and three family members are all headed to federal prison.
Omar, Michael, Orlando and Jose Guadalupe Vela all appeared for sentencing before U.S. District Court Judge David Hittner in Houston on Monday morning.
Omar, his brother Michael and their father Jose Guadalupe Vela were all incident in the "Pay To Play" bribery scandal back in August 2013.
Omar's other brother Orlando was indicted in separate case for embezzling federal funds from his job at the school district.
Omar was the mayor of Progreso while his brother Michael was Progreso Independent School District (PISD) school board president.
Orlando worked as a PISD risk manager and their father was PISD’s director of maintenance and transportation.
Judge David Hittner sentenced Jose Guadalupe Vela to a total of 12 years and 7 months in federal prison.
The judge sentenced Omar Vela to 10 years and 1 month in federal prison while Michael Vela was sentenced to 6 years and 11 months in prison.
Judge Hittner sentenced Orlando Vela to 10 months in federal prison.
The judge ordered Jose Guadalupe Vela was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and forfeit $300,000 dollars.
Omar Vela was ordered to forfeit $314,000 while Michael Vela was ordered to forfeit $300,000 dollars.
Orlando Vela was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $12,874.42. 
 
McAllen0-based architect Jesus Bustos is expected to be sentenced for his role in the "Pay To Play" bribery scandal on August 27th.
