Mexican Police Arrest 7 Salvadoran Gang Members

8/12/2014

MEXICO CITY – Seven members of El Salvador’s Barrio 18 street gang were arrested in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, prosecutors said.

The gang members were armed with knives and seven machetes apparently used to commit crimes.

The suspects have been linked to several muggings and robberies in the state, investigators said.

The gang members were arrested in the city of Mapastepec by Chiapas Attorney General’s Office agents, Federal Police officers, marines, army troops, Public Safety Secretariat personnel and municipal police officers.

The Barrio 18 gang members, who have been identified by their victims, are all Mexicans except for one suspect from Guatemala.

The special prosecutor’s office plans to continue the investigation to identify accomplices and other crimes committed by the suspects, officials said.
