DREAMer Is Sure Her Discussion with Lawmaker Shows Republicans’ True Colors

TUCSON, Arizona – DREAMer Erika Andiola is sure that the video of her discussion with outspoken immigration opponent Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) is causing more voters to take account of the way of thinking among the politicians who currently head the Republican Party.

“Congressman King is trying to eliminate Deferred Action. We’re taking advantage of the chance we had to be able to question them directly and I even gave him my card ... if he has so much interest in ending the program,” Andiola, a representative of the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition, told Efe on Wednesday.

President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program, offers a reprieve from deportation for qualified young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.

Obama launched the initiative to aid the people who would benefit from the DREAM Act, long stalled in Congress.

The video in which Andiola and fellow DREAMer Cesar Vargas are seen confronting King during a visit to Iowa has had a huge impact online with more than 500,000 views on YouTube, and it’s been picked up and broadcast by other communications media outlets.

“During our conversation he said many things to me that didn’t surprise me much, given that he has been characterized by insulting and attacking our community,” Andiola said.

“He repeated to me his same arguments that my parents had broken the U.S. immigration laws and that, therefore, we have no right to be in this country. In his opinion, our permission obtained under Deferred Action is not valid either,” she said.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who is considered to be a possible candidate for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, can also be seen in the video.

As soon as Andiola identified herself as a DREAMer when she approached the group of lawmakers eating lunch at an Iowa restaurant, Paul quickly left.

“This shows that the Republicans are really afraid of talking about immigration and that Paul should carefully consider his stance if he really runs for president,” Andiola said.
