A man is out on bond after he was allegedly smuggling drug money in Edinburg.
It all happened Friday as Hidalgo County Deputy Constables stopped a tan 2008 Chevrolet Silverado truck near the area of Alberta Road on U.S. 281 Frontage Road.
Driver Armando Hernandez Medina was reportedly driving in multiple lanes before he was stopped by authorities.
As the 26-year-old man was speaking with authorities, he seemed nervous and kept shifting his body, according to documents.
The passenger of the truck, who said he was Medina’s cousin also appeared to be nervous.
The Hidalgo County Deputy then asked for consent to search the truck, and Medina gave permission.
Documents state that the deputy found a plastic bag underneath the rear seat of the truck with four bundles of cash wrapped in clear cellophane plastic.
Median and his cousin both denied that they were the owners of the cash.
Hidalgo County’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HITDA) arrived at the scene to take the $35,470 into custody.
Agents also found more cellophane in the floorboard of the truck, with one bundle that looked opened, leading authorities to believe some cash was taken from the stash.
Through the investigation, it was believed the money was from drug trafficking organizations.
Medina continued to deny he owned the cash, and would not tell authorities where the cash came from.
Documents state that Medina claimed to own a carwash, auto sales business and has a Petroleum contract with PEMEX.
Medina failed to show a legitimate source of income to authorities.
A judge charged the 26-year-old man with money laundering, and set a $50,000 bond.
Medina bonded out of jail Monday.
