The Unspoken War: Blast at Mexican Customs Post Leaves 1 Dead

9/2/2014

MEXICO CITY – An explosion at a customs post on an international bridge in the northern Mexican city of Piedras Negras left at least one person dead and five injured, authorities said.

The blast came “from the inside out” of the tax-police barracks, Piedras Negras Mayor Fernando Puron said on Twitter.

“Once the situation was under control, authorities at the three levels of government launched investigations into the causes of the accident,” he said.

President Enrique Peña Nieto and Finance Secretary Luis Videgaray also took to Twitter to express their condolences to the family of the fatality and to the others involved.

While the authorities have not issued an official version about the possible causes of the incident, sources at the Coahuila state Attorney General’s Office said that preliminary investigations indicate an accumulation of gas.

Piedras Negras is located on the south bank of the Rio Grande across from Eagle Pass, Texas.
