SHANGHAI – Shanghai, China’s financial capital and one of the world’s most populated cities, will need an increase from its current 24 million population to 35 million in 2050, to be able to take care of its growing number of elderly people.
This would mean a 45 percent increase in 35 years, necessary to sustain a demographic pyramid in which one third of the population will already be made up of older citizens in 2015, the South China Morning Post reported on Monday.
In order to make this growth possible and sustainable, it is necessary for authorities to invest more resources in education to ensure that Shanghai remains competitive with other megacities in the world, said Zhou Haiwang, deputy director of population and development studies, in a conference.
According to Zhou, the number of the aged in the eastern city will be around 4.6 million in 2015, 7.7 million in 2030, 9.7 million in 2040 and 11 million in 2045.
