The Constitution must be defended or we become a lawless state. The Constitution clearly gives the congress the sole power to legislate and specifically, in this case, the sole power to regulate immigration.
Facts: The president has made proposals for various levels of immigration reform, amnesty, etc, and all such proposals have been soundly defeated and rejected by the congress. The president now claims that if the congress does not act as he dictates, then he will grant amnesty by executive order to millions of aliens who have entered the country and are residing here illegally.
This illegal act would obviously and seriously violate the Constitution and the congress would be required to move for impeachment of the president, otherwise the president has nullified the Constitution and the Republic will have been replaced by a dictatorship.
The congress must do its duty or its members will answer to we the people.
If the current elected government is so corrupt, negligent and incompetent that it fails to uphold its primary duties to abide by, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and the rights and security of the citizens, then it will no longer be a government representing or acting in the interests of the people and it will be time to alter or abolish it and institute new government per the Founding documents.
Each and every congressman and senator swears an oath to defend the Constitution:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."
If the president follows through with his threat to usurp the Constitution, then the congress must impeach. If they fail their sworn duty, then its up to we the people. And we who have sworn the oath take it mighty serious.
