12/28/2014

An AirAsia flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, AirAsia confirmed, after Indonesian media reported statements from a Transport Ministry official.

Indonesia Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the aircraft, flight number QZ8501, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6:17 a.m local time. The flight's departure was at 5:30 am local time and was scheduled to land in Singapore at 8:20 Singapore time. The journey normally takes 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Reuters reports that Mustofa said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.

AirAsia's Airbus A320 configuration is for 180 passengers.

Skytrax named AirAsia the "World's Best Low-Cost Airline" in 2014, a distinction it has reportedly won 6 times.
