Death Confirmed of Man Resisting Arrest on California Border

SAN DIEGO – A man who resisted arrest by a Customs and Border Protection agent died at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on the border between California and Mexico, the San Diego Police Department confirmed Thursday.

The incident occurred about 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve when the man, whose name and nationality have not been released, tried to cross the border from Mexico via the pedestrian walkway.

Authorities said in a press release that when CBP agents checked the man’s documentation they noticed that he had an outstanding arrest warrant and when they tried to handcuff him he “jumped over the processing counter and attacked an agent.”

More CBP agents intervened and as they were trying to subdue the suspect, one of the agents Tasered him.

After being Tasered, the 40-year-old man became unresponsive and stopped breathing, authorities said, adding that they tried to resuscitate him before paramedics arrived but their efforts were in vain.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The press release said that four CBP agents, whose names were not released, were moderately injured in the incident and were taken to a nearby hospital.

The case is under investigation by the San Diego Police Department’s homicide unit, while the Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy on the man to determine the cause of death.
