Like Sands Through The Hour Glass: Obama Just Appointed A Former Soap Opera Producer To Be Our Ambassador To Hungary

12/3/2014

A year ago, President Barack Obama nominated former “The Bold And The Beautiful” producer Colleen Bell to be our ambassador to Hungary. According to CNN, yesterday Harry Reid’s Senateconfirmed his nomination. What remains unknown is what the hell inspired the president to nominate her to this position. The folks at NPR suspect that it might be because she happens to be a huge political donor. Keep in mind that nominating a big political donor to be “an ambassador to a relatively small country is something of a Washington punch line and also a tradition.”
Here’s the catch – Colleen Bell doesn’t have a clue:
At Bell’s confirmation hearing, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) asked her about America’s strategic interest in Hungary. The answer that followed could best be described as a word soup.
“Well, we have a strategic interest,” she said. “In terms of what are our key priorities, in Hungary. I think our key priorities are to, um, improve upon as I mentioned the security relationship, and also the law enforcement and to promote business opportunities, increase trade…”
Plus, the Weekly Standard reveals that even White House spokesperson Josh Earnest is “unable to provide a cogent explanation for why Colleen Bell, a former soap opera producer, just became the U.S. ambassador to Hungary”:
Earnest’s reasoning is that Obama is very confident in his pick. Yeah, but this is the same guy who was confident that sending a love letter to Ayatollah Khomeini was a good idea . . .
