Transformation of Audiences, a Challenge for News Organizations

VERACRUZ, Mexico – The transformation of audiences as a result of new technologies, with more connected and demanding consumers, is one of the main challenges for journalistic organizations and communications groups, which are being forced to adapt their business models to the new reality.

This was the central issue discussed at the 3rd Communications Forum, held in the eastern Mexican city of Veracruz within the framework of the 24th Ibero-American Summit, which kicked off here on Monday.

The president of Agencia Efe, Spain’s international news agency, Jose Antonio Vera, moderated the “New Business Models” panel discussion along with Televisa president Emilio Azcarraga, emphasizing the need to “reinvent” business models in the communications sector, particularly in television, given the dramatic changes that are under way.

“Audiences are much more demanding nowadays and they want to consume more and better,” said Azcarraga, who – nevertheless – defended the idea that content and quality must continue to be “the heart” of the platforms used for their dissemination.

Meanwhile, Vera emphasized the “spectacular” evolution of this kind of event on the communications sector after the forum’s inauguration at the Ibero-American Summit in Cadiz, Spain, two years ago.

The Efe chief proposed that these forums be broadened to other areas such as sports, science and the arts, and he encouraged journalists and communications media to collaborate “in a powerful way” to promote the Ibero-American Summits.

Participants at the forum also agreed that the development of the Internet and new technologies have radically changed the profile of the consumer, who today is much more connected, more demanding and can interact on the social networks having become a “creator of content” in his own right.

Top officials in the main Latin American and Spanish communications groups participated in the forum, organized by Spain’s Secretariat of State for Communications and the Mexican Televisa group.
