New York Group That Called For ‘Dead Cops’ Was The ‘Trayvon Martin Organizing Committee’

12/26/2014

The New York City group that called for “dead cops” in a widely circulated video is most likely– no joke — the Trayvon Martin Organizing Committee (TMOC). (RELATED: What Do NYC Protesters Want? Dead Cops. When Do They Want Them? Now.)
In a piece outing “The Monsters Who Screamed For Dead Cops,” The Daily Beast’s Jacob Siegel cites a “web of circumstantial ties” to the group. The man who shot the disturbing video — showing marchers chanting, “What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want them? Now!” — told Siegel that he saw the group marching with signs reading “No Cops, No Prison.”
Siegel produces evidence from Instagram that the TMOC marched with that sign at rallies. Likewise, he notes that a slogan being yelled at the beginning of the video, “Arms up, shoot back,” also appears on the TMOC Twitter account. (RELATED: New York Times Defends DeBlasio After Cop Killings … But Blamed GOP After Giffords Shooting)
Whether the group is actually the one in the video, they certainly appear to be very radical. The committee’s website vows to fight for “Justice for Trayvon Martin and all victims of white supremacy & capitalism,” and features a photo of an upside-down American flag being burned.
The group also appears to have no qualms about violence. “Most people expressed a belief (or hope) that Zimmerman will be killed sooner rather than later,” reads one blog post. “While we certainly aren’t opposed to this, it is not a real solution.” (VIDEO: Giuliani: Obama, Holder Should Be ‘Ashamed’ For Creating ‘Severe Anti-Police Hatred’)
In one part of the site, they confirm that TMOC members were among those arrested for assaulting police officers on the Brooklyn Bridge: “As of 9am on Saturday, December 20, comrades of the Trayvon Martin Organizing Committee-NYC have surrendered to the custody of the NYPD, for their alleged involvement in an incident on the Brooklyn Bridge on the night of the Millions March.”
Trayvon Martin is, of course, the black Florida teen shot dead by George Zimmerman in 2012. Zimmerman was found not guilty of a crime after claiming at trial that Martin had ambushed and attacked him. Despite the organization’s name, they have no ties to the Martin family.
