Two Policemen Gunned Down in New York

NEW YORK – Two officers of the New York Police Department died Saturday after being shot while inside their patrol car in Brooklyn.

The suspected gunman died later, after fleeing the scene – he apparently committed suicide in a nearby subway station as police were hunting him down.

According to preliminary reports, the man approached the police car at the intersection of Myrtle and Tompkins Avenues and immediately opened fire and shot the two policemen, who were rapidly taken to Woodhull Hospital, where they died.

One police official told the daily New York Post that it was an “execution.” The newspaper published two photos that were posted by the suspect on social networks hours before the murders.

One of them shows a handgun and the other some pants and running shoes similar to those seen in pictures of the suspected murderer being treated in the hospital emergency room after the shooting.

In the messages posted with those photos, the suspect talked about his intention to avenge the death of Eric Garner, the African-American who died this summer after a police agent strangled him.

The case sparked fierce protests in New York, especially in recent weeks after a grand jury decided not to indict the policeman involved.

These were the first policemen to be shot and killed while on duty in New York since 2011.
