56th Anniversary of Fidel Castro’s Entry in Havana Commemorated

1/10/2015

HAVANA – The Cuban capital has celebrated the 56th anniversary of the entrance of Fidel Castro into the city following the triumph of the revolution on a day that also marked one year since the last public appearance of Castro, who is yet to comment on the reopening of U.S.-Cuban ties.

“Fidel is waiting for his moment because he is a grand prophet who waits for the opportune moment to say something,” said Hugo Perez Silva, who entered Havana 56 years ago with Castro in what is famously called the “Freedom Caravan.”

Thursday’s commemoration came at a time when there are rumors and speculation on social networks about Castro, 88, who took political retirement in 2006 due to ill health.

His last public appearance was on Jan. 8 2014, when he attended the inauguration of an art studio in Havana.

Castro’s silence on the issue of the normalization of U.S.-Cuba relations and the return of the three Cuban spies belonging to the “Cuban Five” group who served long sentences in the United States is considered odd.

However, Silva did not give much importance to Castro’s silence and said that it was a moment for celebrations because the revolution had won.
