ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – Nobody was hurt Thursday when an armed man entered the studios of Dutch public broadcaster NOS during the nightly news program and demanded airtime.
The incident took place at the Media Park radio and television complex in Hilversum, 30 kilometers (19 miles) south-east of Amsterdam.
“The armed man, who has been detained, entered the building with a hostage who might have been a security guard,” NOS chief Jan de Jong told Radio 1.
Brandishing a silencer-equipped pistol, the man demanded 10 minutes of live airtime during the newscast and said “we want to tell the world about many things that are happening,” according to NOS.
The intruder claimed to be acting on behalf of a collective of computer hackers, NOS said.
NOS interrupted the broadcast from Hilversum and did not resume programming until nearly an hour later, from a different studio in The Hague.
Once back on the air, NOS ran footage of the armed intruder talking to a network employee on the way to the set of the newscast minutes before police rushed in and subdued the man.
Dutch authorities had already increased the police presence at Media Park following the deadly attack earlier this month in Paris on the officers of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
