As Rumors of Fidel Castro Death Swirl, Cuba Exiles in Miami Report Castro Family Movement

1/9/2015

MIAMI -- Cuban exiles in Miami say they have detected "tension" between close relatives of Fidel Castro and "military circles" in Cuba by the many rumors that have been unleashed in recent hours on the death of the former Cuban president.

Exile sources consulted by EFE said Wednesday that the information coming from Havana reveals "tension" among the military, as well as family relations of Fidel Castro.

Castro, 88, was last seen in public 366 days ago as a gaunt presence who shuffled his way through an art gallery in Havana.

His absence has been especially conspicuous because he has made no public comment about the announcement that Cuba and the U.S. will restore diplomatic relations after more than 50 years of hostility.

Little information about Castro is officially disclosed, including where he lives. But his silence has once again started rumors about his fragile health.
