MIAMI – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, is calling on federal authorities to investigate the alleged mistreatment of three elephants in Miami by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
PETA told the U.S. Department of Agriculture that the circus deprived the elephants of veterinary care for more than 24 hours.
The elephants were transported by train and confined on cars without medical treatment for about four days, which is a violation of the 1966 Animal Welfare Act, the animal rights group said.
“The non-compliance with medical treatment for the animals is an abomination, and that this may have been because the elephants were kept in train cars would be twice as much cruel and illegal,” PETA deputy director for legal affairs Delcianna Winders said.
PETA cited a report by USDA inspectors who expressed concern about the lack of veterinary care provided to three of the circus’s elephants while they were transported on trains for three days.
This is not the first time the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is accused of mistreating elephants at its facilities.
PETA and other animal rights groups have alleged that animals at the circus’s Center for the Conservation of Elephants in Florida were chained, beaten and tormented with sharp objects.
