Canadian Spies Monitor Millions of Internet Downloads

1/29/2015

TORONTO – Every day, Canada’s Communications Security Establishment monitors tens of millions of Internet downloads around the world in an effort to detect terrorist plots, state-funded CBC television reported Wednesday.

The CBC had access to documents provided by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, about the activities of the CSE, the Canadian counterpart of Washington’s National Security Agency.

The extent of the CSE’s activities proves the Canadian intelligence services have a surveillance capacity equal to – or better than – NSA’s, the CBC said.

The CSE has been implicated in other controversial activities.

In 2013, Snowden revealed that CSE had infiltrated the Brazilian government’s computer and communications systems, allegedly to glean information about the mining and energy sectors in the South American country.

The disclosure sparked a diplomatic spat between the two countries, with Brasilia voicing outrage about the Canadian spying.
