Largest Underground Cigarette Factory Dismantled in Spain

1/15/2015

Here's a question. Why not become a legitimate tobacco company if they're that damn good?

SEVILLE, Spain – Spanish security forces on Wednesday dismantled the largest underground cigarette factory in the country in an operation in which 10 people were arrested.

The illegal factory, located in the city of Seville, had a production capacity of 65,000 cigarette packs per day.

Police sources explained that authorities confiscated 30 tons of tobacco, in addition to 64,500 cigarette packs ready for sale, following investigations that started last June.

The police also confiscated four vehicles and several firearms, in addition to heavy machinery and materials used for the production and packaging of cigarettes.

The factory was camouflaged as a pig and cattle farm, and operated on a global scale: it imported bulk tobacco from other countries and put it through a production line in which the cigarettes were rolled and packaged, according to investigations.

Several of the 10 detainees, including two Greek nationals, have a previous history of drug trafficking and tobacco smuggling, and now face new charges of establishing an unlicensed factory, money laundering and other charges concerning workers’ rights and unauthorized possession of weapons.
