Netanyahu Wins Likud Leadership Ahead of General Elections

1/2/2015

JERUSALEM – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has won the Likud party leadership after garnering 75 percent of the votes in primary elections, according to the Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

After more than half of the ballots were counted, Danny Danon, Netanyahu’s challenger, had gotten only 19 percent of the votes.

“So far, the results indicate that Prime Minister Netanyahu has succeeded in the elections. I congratulate the prime minister and wish him luck,” Danon said.

After winning, Netanyahu got the right to submit the names of two deputies to the list of candidates for the general elections scheduled for March 17.

A total of 55 percent of eligible Likud voters participated in the elections, five points more than the turnout rate in the primary elections of 2012, at 600 polling stations around the country.

Around 96,600 members of the far-right Likud party had the right to vote for their leader who will compete in the general elections.

It was the first primary election to be held in Israel in preparation for the March contest which was called early after Netanyahu dismissed former ministers Yair Lapid of finance and Tzipi Livni of justice from his cabinet.
