JERUSALEM – The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas praised on Wednesday an assault by a young Palestinian in which he stabbed nine people aboard a bus in Tel Aviv.
The incident took place early Wednesday when the 23-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank, who has not been identified, attacked the passengers on the bus which covers a route in the southern area of the city, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.
Police shot the attacker in the leg and arrested him.
“Police officers are patrolling Tel Aviv to prevent any further attacks,” Rosenfeld said on Twitter.
According to the spokesman, four of the victims’ injuries were listed as moderate to severe, while the five others received minor injuries.
In a statement released to the media, a spokesman for the Islamist movement, Hamas, lauded the attack as a “heroic operation and natural reaction to Israeli terrorism.”
