Class Contradictions Lead to Fanaticism, Uruguay’s Mujica Says

MONTEVIDEO – Expressing surprise about this week’s violent events in Paris, Uruguayan President Jose Mujica said Friday that the class contradictions of contemporary society often combine with other tensions to lead to fanaticism.

During his regular weekly broadcast on Radio M24, Mujica talked about the incidents in France that started on Wednesday, when 12 people were killed in an attack on satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

“Fanaticisms are the lacerating pathology of our times,” Mujica said. “They force all of us as a society to see the need to cultivate education in tolerance for diversity.”

“The painful events in Paris have surprised us once again,” he said.

“Severe contradictions are inevitable in this world we live in,” the president added. “Contradictions of interests, ideas, religious creeds, contradictions between corporations and the rest of society, between some small groups and the general interest of society.”

“The most serious and deep contradictions in any society are class contradictions,” Mujica said. “They are there, underlying our existence, and frequently they mix with other contradictions turning out as fanaticism. There’s nothing worse than the fanatical mentality.”

“We need to learn from what happens in the world, and to keep in mind that what happens to others might happen to us,” the president said.
