Battle Over Satanic Coloring Books Prompts School Board to Ban Bibles

2/12/2015

A Florida school board has made a controversial decision to ban the distribution of religious and political material in its schools.
The Orange County School Board previously allowed copies of the Bible in their schools, but they decided to reconsider the policy after receiving a request from the Satanic Temple to hand out Satanic coloring books.
The board decided that to avoid legal action, it had to ban Bibles and any other religious material from being passed out to students.
WFTV reported:
Orange County School Board Chairman Bill Sublette said religious instruction belongs in the home and in the church, and not in the public schools.
"This school board isn't going to allow disruptive groups like the Satanic Temple to distribute material. We certainly are not going to continue to have this circus," said Sublette.
The board voted 7 to 1 to approve the ban, with member Christine Moore casting the dissenting vote.
"I'm not going to vote for it tonight," said Moore. "I don't think it's the end of it, but understand that it is an incredibly difficult situation."
"We do believe the policy we're passing tonight will withstand judicial scrutiny," Sublette said.
