MEXICO CITY – Cuernavaca, the capital of the central state of Morelos, has taken the top spot on the list of Mexico’s most violent cities from Acapulco, and Morelos now has the highest rate of violence among the country’s 32 states, the Citizens Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice said.
Cuernavaca had the highest violence index among cities with populations of more than 100,000, of which there were 223, in 2014, the council said in a report.
Cuernavaca had a violence rate of 62.19, while Acapulco, a Pacific resort city in Guerrero state, had a rate of 55.54 and Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, had a violence rate of 49.83, the council said.
Acapulco was Mexico’s most violent city in 2012 and 2013, the non-governmental organization said.
Cuernavaca’s violence rate is three times the national rate of 18.84, the Citizens Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice said.
Five of the 20 cities with the highest violence rates are in Mexico state, which surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area.
The states of Morelos, Guerrero and Baja California each had three cities on the top-20 most violent list.
The Citizens Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice prepared the report using National Public Safety System statistics released last month.
The statistics, which were obtained from prosecutors’ offices in all of Mexico’s states, are based on murder, kidnapping, rape, assault, armed robbery and extortion cases.
