ISTANBUL – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the UN Security Council for not having any Islamic state as a permanent member, in a speech published by the daily Milliyet local newspaper on Tuesday.
In the speech he delivered on Monday at the Justice Academy in Ankara, Erdogan stressed that the interests of the world cannot be decided by only five countries that happen to have been given permanent seats on the council.
Erdogan reiterated his request for the UN to undertake internal reforms that would reduce the authority of the Security Council and the veto power of its permanent members, as well as increasing the number of permanent member states on the council.
He added that it is unfair to not include an Islamic country among those with permanent membership in the Security Council (the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France).
The Turkish president also pointed out that the 10 temporary members of the Council have no power of their own to make decisions while he criticized China and Russia for using their veto to prevent adopting a solution for the Syrian crisis.
“You cannot make 196 countries live in accordance with the decisions made by any of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Nobody has the right to do this,” the president added.
