The stone just keeps on rollin'....
MEXICO CITY – Immigration officers detained 32 Guatemalan migrants who were traveling in a truck in the southeastern state of Chiapas, the Mexican National Migration Institute, or INM, said.
The truck, which did not have tags, was spotted by officers on a highway in the Lagos de Montebello area, located on the limits of the cities of La Independencia and La Trinitaria, the INM said in a statement.
The driver stopped the vehicle and fled with two other people when officers ordered him to stop.
An inspection of the truck turned up “32 foreigners from Guatemala in poor conditions, including 16 minors, who said they had hired presumed traffickers with the goal of reaching the United States,” the INM said.
The migrants were transferred to an INM facility in Chiapas, which is located on the border with Guatemala, for processing.
The Guatemalans were given medical care and food, and allowed to contact relatives and consular officials from their country, the INM said.
Child welfare officials interviewed 14 of the minors, who were traveling alone, the INM said.
An estimated 300,000 Central Americans undertake the hazardous journey across Mexico each year on their way to the United States.
The trek is a dangerous one, with criminals and corrupt Mexican officials preying on the migrants.
Gangs kidnap, rob and murder migrants, who are often targeted in extortion schemes, Mexican officials say.
