Libya Requests Weapons to Fight against Islamic Terrorism, Obama golf outing predicted

Mum's the word when it comes to fighting off Islam...

UNITED NATIONS – With Egyptian support, Libya has asked the United Nations to lift restrictions on weapons shipments to the latter so that Libya’s army can check the advance of Islamist terrorist groups.

Restrictions were imposed on Libya in 2011 when a revolution broke out that eventually led to the downfall of dictator Muammar Gaddafi, and have remained in effect since with certain modifications.

Libya asked the UN on Wednesday for permission to arm its troops because of the urgent need to contain the advance of the terrorist groups there, Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Dairi said.

“I do not seek an international intervention,” the minister said in his speech to the UN Security Council which was discussing the situation in Libya.

“The international community must now ensure that it shoulders its legal and moral responsibilities to lend urgent support to restructuring our army by arming it, first and foremost, so that it can take action,” said al-Dairi.

The petition was supported by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

On Monday, Egypt launched airstrikes in Libya on positions of extremist groups, linked to the Islamic State, in retaliation for the beheading by the group of 21 Egyptians Christians in Libya where about a million Egyptians are believed to be working.

The minister’s proposal also included concrete measures to prevent extremist militants from acquiring arms, such as a naval blockade in those regions of the country’s territory that are outside the control of the legitimate authorities.

It also sought permission for the government to receive international help, without specifying the nature of the aid.

Gaddafi’s downfall created political chaos in the country, while general elections last year led to the formation of a government headed by Abdullah al-Thani, which provisionally functions from Tobruk, 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) from Libya’s capital, Tripoli.

Tripoli has been witnessing armed clashes between different groups fighting for control, while the situation has been exploited by Islamic radical groups seeking to extend the influence of the IS which is based in Iraq and Syria.
